does my younger sister have an Eating Disorder?

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Question by Angel: does my younger sister have an Eating Disorder?
I’m worried about my younger sister… she is only 10 years ancient… but I know 10 year olds can have eating disorders. I’m not exactly sure if she has one or if she is just trying to eat healthier. My sister goes to a “wellness” school meaning they go on daily mile walks and have more gym time, assemblys on nutrition and only healthy food is allowed at school.
Recently my sister has had a shape classed focused on puberty and nutrition. I reckon she is being reasonably affected by it. She now washes her face 2-3 times a day because she doesn’t want acne. I told her not to wash it so often because she has dry skin genuinely and she doesn’t listen… she trusts her teacher.
I heard that at school she leaned how eating too much sugar and oil is terrible for them. And that kids need to limit their bread and protein intake. We are asain so we follow an asian diet which is natrally low in protein. My sister recently has been eating less meat which isn’t that excellent because we only eat meat 2 times a week and she souldn’t stop eating it when we have it. Also this week during jump break, my sister hasn’t been eating lunch (april vacation) and has only had like a handful of chips for lunch. I’m prettu sure she is counting how many chips she eats.

This is her diet-
breakfast- bread roll with 1/2 a glass of milk
Snack- usally no snack anymore
Lunch- a handful of chips
Snack- some fruit
Dinner- 1/2 a bowl of rice and vegetables (raw most of the time)

Is this healthy for her? She is 10, 4″11 and has a bmi of 16…
umm… being asian… my parents don’t know anythnig about eating disorders. I only know about it because a close friend of mine went through one..

That school is kinda fucked up… anyway at the moment I would start the watch her and sorta make her eat a modest more and see her reaction. If she starts finding excuses to not eat its a red flag here are some more things to watch out for
-over excersising
-going to the bathroom after meals
-droping massive amounts of weight
-tiredness
-change in attitude
