Thinking in Circles About Obesity: Applying Systems Thinking to Weight Management

Thinking in Circles About Obesity has been “Highly Commended” in the “Well loved Medicine” category of the 2010 BMA Book Awards. Low-carb…low-stout…high-protein…high-fiber…Americans are food-savvy, categorize-conscious, calorie-aware—and still quick weight in malevolence of all their excellent intentions. Worse still, today’s children run the risk of a shorter life anticipation than their parents. Thinking in Circles About Obesity brings a healthy part of critical thinking, spiced with on-

403 Park Access, Schools and Child Obesity by State Assembly District

403 Park Access, Schools and Child Obesity by State Assembly District

Levels of child obesity range from 23 to 39% in Los Angeles County, as shown in Map 403.

There are unfair school, park, and shape disparities in Los Angeles. Children of color living in poverty inexplicably lack access to parks, to school fields, to healthy food in grocery stores and restaurants, and to cars or transit to reach parks, schools, or healthy foods. They suffer from the highest levels of child obesity.

The shape implications of the lack of places to play in parks and schools are profound. In California, 73% of fifth, seventh, and ninth graders did not achieve minimum physical fitness standards in 2004. In LAUSD, 87% of students were not physically fit. Yet in 2006, 51% of school districts monitored in California, including LAUSD, did not enforce statutory physical education requirements. At LAUSD’s South Gate High School, 1,600 children took the state Fitnessgram test and not one passed. Forty schools did not have a single physically fit student. Less than 10% of students were physically fit in nearly one-third of the 605 schools in LAUSD. Only eight schools had student populations that are more than 50% physically fit.

It is alarming to note that childhood obesity is increasing day by day in developed countries. Obesity is a serious issue that is having many parents and medical experts worried. Children who are obese are having problems adjusting in society as they become the butt of jokes and are ridiculed by their peers. Children who are more than 20% over weight are termed as obese. Such children become aggressive and this can be a worrying issue.

Obesity causes

There are various causes for childhood obesity. Excessive consumption of soda and fried food stuff and ready made foods can be one of the major causes for childhood obesity. Fatty foods makes the children add weight. Another reason for overweight is laziness and no physical activity. Since both parents are working, children are unsupervised and hence spend all their time in front of the television set. They snack on fried stuff and drink soda which adds to the calories. Indeed the ‘Pleased meal’ is not so pleased after all. Moreover being a couch potato in front of television or video games further adds to the weight in children. Some times being obese can be genetic also. Environmental factors, lifestyle preferences and cultural environment play pivotal roles in the alarming rise of obesity worldwide. These are the main childhood obesity causes.
